The 7 Most Ridiculous Ways to Get a DUI

Ridiculous Ways to Get a DUI-

It’s easier than you think to get a DUI.

Plenty of people offer totally untrue advice: “You can’t get a DUI on a bike!” or “If you’ve only been drinking beer you can’t get a DUI.” But sometimes the way people get a DUI is so utterly ridiculous it needs to be remembered for posterity, if not for the lessons.

1. On a Lawnmower
Yup, on a lawnmower. As recently as last month a man was arrested in Colorado for driving his riding lawnmower the wrong way down a one-way street. And guess what? Even if you’re in your own yard, you’re still operating a motor vehicle when you’re mowing so save the drinking for after.

2. In a Recliner
In 2008 a Minnesota man drove his motorized Lay-Z-Boy chair, complete with cupholders and magazine rack, into a parked car outside a bar. A DUI followed, and the police department got the last laugh by auctioning off the chair for charity.

3. In a Golf Cart
There are so many instances of this happening it’s impossible to pick one to highlight. Golf and drinking go hand-in-hand but if you’re planning on taking the cart for a spin – on the course or off – get yourself a designated caddy.

4. On a Bike
Yes, a two-wheeled bike. Laws differ from state to state but most include language that covers DUIs on bikes. Take Washington’s law, for example, that describes a vehicle as, “every device capable of being moved upon a public highway and in, upon, or by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a public highway, including bicycles." Don’t drink and bike.

5. Riding a Horse
There have actually been several instances of people getting DUIs on horseback, surprisingly. In 2012 a 55-year old Kentucky man was arrested for riding his horse at twice the legal limit (although it probably didn’t help he had a jar full of moonshine on him.) The word “vehicle” can mean lots of things!

This is an actual product you can buy. In 2008 a New York man was arrested for felony DUI for driving his motorized cooler and trailer full of beers down the sidewalk. He was way over the legal limit and apparently had been driving the cooler vehicle at speeds up to 15 mph for years.

7. On a Motorized Wheelchair
First and foremost, do NOT ride your motorized wheelchair in or near the street. And if you do, please don’t do it drunk. People get arrested for this every single year, including on private property! If it has a motor, don’t touch it while you’re drinking.

The lesson here? The only reliable means of transportation after you’ve been drinking is your own two feet! Don’t find yourself taking a court-ordered DUI class after getting a ridiculous ticket. The laws, though they might seem frivolous, are designed to keep you and the general public safe. Obey them!
